Nathan Atta-Aidoo was born in the relatively beautiful countryside town of Ajumako-Bisease, Ghana; a town he fondly refers to as the 'higher civilisation' in his writings. He holds a postgraduate degree in Economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the same university. Nathan's writings spans from his observations of his country to his experiences of the world as a global citizen. He currently works as a EDI Analyst with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. He was previously a Mathematics instructor with the Ghana Education Service. Nathan resides in Tema, Ghana. He is the father of the beautiful Nana Ama Atta-Aidoo

THE DANGER OF LOW EXPECTATIONS; A LESSON FROM J.H. MENSAH

I carried with me for years the image of a man I never met personally but spoke to briefly on phone. I might have been 17 or 18 years then and he was at the twilight of his long and illustrious political career. He had given his best years as a public servant for the country of his birth. Even at that young age, I silently wished he would have reneged on his retirement plans. But the hawks were circling around him and he knew the time had come for him gracefully bow out with his dignity intact.

…Indeed, it got me wondering if my Marxist Nkrumaist leaning teachers indoctrinated me. Some of my most favourite teachers in both secondary school and university where people who espoused views that I considered outrageous but I would never say they indoctrinated me. Some of them were among the most brilliant teachers I ever encountered.

WHAT IS THE TRUE PURPOSE OF UNIVERSITY EDUCATION?

I believe universities at the core of their missions should remain as bastions of free thinking and the window through with a society draws inspiration for the development of its civilization. What then happens when the students our universities are churning out are just a bunch of narrow-minded educated folks who don’t believe in the contest of ideas?
